What abaca is
Abaca is drawn from the leaf of a banana plant: one of the strongest natural fibres in the world, and entirely biodegradable. Often called Manila hemp, it has been valued for generations for its remarkable strength, which is why it has long been chosen for ropes and fine papers that need to last. In a bag, that strength becomes quiet reassurance. You are carrying something that can take the weight of everyday life. And because abaca is a plant fibre through and through, it will one day return gently to the earth rather than lingering in it. Beauty that borrows nothing it cannot give back.
How it is made
Each bag is braided by hand, so no two are exactly alike; the gentle variations are the signature of a human hand. We work in small batches out of respect for both the earth and humanity. A single piece takes hours of patient, repetitive craft: the fibre coiled and shaped into the soft rounds you can see across the body of the bag, then set onto its frame and finished by hand. Small-batch making lets us hold every piece to the same standard, and it means the person who made yours had the time to make it well. The little irregularities are not flaws. They are proof that a person, not a machine, made this for you.

Every maker is fairly paid, on fair terms: when you carry this, you take part in that exchange. This matters to us more than almost anything. A beautiful object made through someone else's hardship is not beautiful to us at all. We build our partnerships around dignity, honest pay, and lasting relationships rather than one-off orders, so that the skill behind these bags is valued and can be passed on. Caring for your handwoven abaca crossbody
With proper care, your handwoven abaca crossbody will stay lovely for many years. A few simple habits are all it asks.
Keep it dry. Abaca is strong yet natural, so spare it heavy rain and damp conditions. If it does get wet, reshape it by hand and let it dry on its own, away from direct heat.
Store it with its shape. When you are not carrying it, tuck a little tissue or a soft cloth inside to keep its shape, and let it rest somewhere cool and out of harsh, fading sunlight.
Treat marks gently. For the odd mark, a lightly damp cloth and a soft touch are kinder than any harsh cleaner, and it lets the fibre keep its natural character.
Do this, and the bag will only grow more characterful with time. It is made to be kept and handed on.
